Before you replace anything, understand that the water dispenser and the ice maker share a supply line, but the water inlet valve has a separate solenoid for the ice maker. If the dispenser works, you know water is reaching the valve. The failure is likely downstream: the ice maker side of the valve, the fill tube, or the ice maker assembly itself. The most common issue in our units is the fill tube freezing because the freezer temperature is too low or the defrost cycle isn't clearing frost. That's a cheap repair, not a new refrigerator.

Most people focus on the visible symptom and miss the diagnostic path. The question everyone asks is “do we need a replacement?” What I mean is, they're already preparing to spend $2,000. The question they should ask is “is the ice maker actually getting water and power?” I had one $210 service call fix a $2,100 Samsung. Swing door smart lock knob: what should I buy?

A swing door smart lock knob replaces a standard entry knob on a hinged door with a keypad or fingerprint knob. For a typical exterior swing door, there are two formats: knob-only and a smart lock that drives the deadbolt. For a unit entrance, I would not spec a knob-only smart lock. Knob locks depend on the latch strike and are easier to force. If the door already has a deadbolt, buy a smart deadbolt and keep the basic knob. If you want one product, choose a smart handle that includes a deadbolt. Swing direction matters too, especially for out-swinging doors—the strike plate and weather exposure need to match.

The cost angle is less obvious. People compare price and finish before checking lock grading and handing. We bought 10 “smart lock knobs” for a renovation and then realized they were left-hand only. The $1,800 order became a $300 return plus a week of schedule delay. What I mean is, the right way to evaluate is: damage resistance grade, handing, backset, and whether it auto-locks for a commercial schedule. The knob style should be the last thing you choose.

How does a dehumidifier work in a room?

The short version: a fan pulls room air over cold evaporator coils. Moisture condenses on the coils, drips into a tank or a drain hose, and then the air passes over a warm condenser coil before leaving the unit. The room gets less humid, and the air output is slightly warmer. Compressor units work like a mini AC turned inward. Desiccant units use a moisture-absorbing wheel instead of coils, which makes them more effective in cooler or unheated rooms.

For buying, the specification to compare is water removal at the actual temperature you'll run it, not the big box marketing number. A 70-pint unit at 80°F may only pull half that at 65°F. I've seen facilities buy cheap 30-pint units and then pay staff to empty tanks several times a day. The labor cost outweighs the upfront savings. Look at the EnergyGuide label from the FTC and DOE—it lists capacity in a standardized way. The tank size and timer are nice extras, but capacity at your room's average temperature is the number that affects the budget.

Repair or replace: what's the most cost-effective decision?

I can't give you a universal rule. But after tracking 1,000+ repair orders, I've landed on a three-step framework. First, calculate total cost of ownership: base price, install, energy, maintenance, and the odds of a second failure. Second, get at least two paid diagnostic opinions for any repair over $300. Third, decide based on remaining service life, not age. A $250 Samsung ice maker repair on a 5-year-old fridge is usually worth it. A $450 drain pump and control board fix on a 9-year-old washer probably is not, unless cabinets or a matching set force your hand.

The question everyone asks is “repair cost vs replacement price.” The question they should ask is “what will this appliance cost me over the next three years?” That's where I've seen budget overruns happen.
